Understanding ROSH HASHANAH
Rosh Hashanah opens the Jewish year. It is a time of kingship, judgment and return to the essential, lived through prayer and the serious joy of Yom Tov.
It is when we wish for a good and sweet year — for ourselves, our family, and the whole people of Israel.
Traditions
- The sounding of the Shofar.
- The special prayers of Rosh Hashanah.
- Yom Tov meals, with family or community.
- Symbolic signs (simanim), depending on the community.
- Apple dipped in honey and the wish for a good and sweet year.
When a practice varies, it is presented as a custom according to communities, not as a universal obligation.
