The essentials
In brief
Sukkot begins on the 15th of Tishrei and lasts seven days: we leave the solidity of the house to dwell in a fragile Sukkah.
The holiday recalls the protection received in the desert and calls for joy — it is called "the time of our joy."
Two mitzvot mark these days: dwelling in the Sukkah and taking the four species, the Lulav and the Etrog.

DWELLING IN THE SUKKAH
For seven days, the Sukkah becomes the place of living: meals are eaten there, guests are received, and according to custom, one sleeps there.
Its very fragility is a lesson: true security does not come from walls.
The rules of construction and cases of rain or illness fall under Halakha: ask your Rabbi.
THE FOUR SPECIES
The Lulav, the Etrog, the Hadassim, and the Aravot are taken together, with a blessing, every day of the holiday except Shabbat.
Tradition sees in this the image of a gathered people: different qualities held together in one hand.
CHOL HAMOED
The intermediate days retain the character of the holiday: the day's mitzvot continue, while certain activities are permitted.
Care is taken to preserve joy and study, and not to turn these days into ordinary ones.
HOSHANA RABBAH
The seventh day is marked by the Hoshanot and, according to community customs, a night of study.
Tradition regards it as the last moment of the period of judgment of Tishrei.
