Understanding PURIM

Purim recalls the salvation of the Jewish people in the time of the Megillah of Esther. Joy there is inseparable from giving.

Four main mitzvot structure the day: reading the Megillah, Mishloach Manot, Matanot LaEvyonim and the Purim Seudah.

Traditions

  • Reading the Megillah.
  • Mishloach Manot: sending food gifts to a friend.
  • Matanot LaEvyonim: giving, on Purim day, at least one gift each to two people in need.
  • The Purim Seudah, the festive meal.

When a practice varies, it is presented as a custom according to communities, not as a universal obligation.

What this feast teaches us

« On Purim, Tzedakah is not alongside the feast. It is part of the feast. »
