WHAT PURIM RECOUNTS
The Book of Esther recounts a decree targeting the entire people, and its complete reversal.
Nothing in it is presented as supernatural: it is the reading of the whole that reveals a hidden hand.
THE FOUR MITZVOT OF THE DAY
The day is organized around four precise obligations:
- Hearing the reading of the Megillah, at night and in the morning.
- Mishloach Manot: sending gifts of food to one's fellow.
- Matanot LaEvyonim: giving to the needy on the day of Purim.
- Seudat Purim: the festive meal of the day.
The number of gifts, their nature, and the time of the meal follow custom: ask your Rabbi.
THE FAST OF ESTHER
The eve of Purim is a fast day, from daybreak to nightfall, in memory of the fast mentioned in the story.
It prepares the day: the joy of Purim does not come from nowhere.
The sick, pregnant, or frail are not in the same situation: ask your Rabbi.
PRAYERS AND ADDITIONS
The passage Al Hanissim is added to the Amidah and to the Birkat Hamazon; Hallel is not recited on Purim.
